It was recently the season for recruiting new fellows for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and Evan Shereck, OHSU/Doernbecher’s Director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program contacted us with this message: “We are very happy to announce that today we matched another 2 amazing applicants for our Fellowship. We are so excited for them to join us in July.” Welcome Andrew Gledhill and Austin Healy!
These Fellows, like others before them, will begin a three year program. Their first year they will spend treating patients and learning as much about pediatric cancer they can. This is the stretch during which they have been warned not to work more than 80 hours per week. (That’s no joke!) This is when our support is most important, because we allow them to focus on their work and not worry about writing grants to pay for their training and education. Their second and third years quiet down for them a little bit as they settle into the routine of laboratory research. When they are finished, they are the leading edge in the fight against childhood cancer and their work, which you will have supported, will consist of treating patients, conducting research, managing clinical trials and training other doctors. This will go on for the duration of their careers which can span as many as forty years. That’s why we say your support has impact.
